The History of MCA of New York

An informal meeting of thirteen firms representing the manufacturers of steam heating apparatus was held on October 5, 1885. The group acted on an idea that would forever change the mechanical contracting industry in the New York City area. They united themselves and established the Heating Piping Contractors New York City Association, what is known today as one of the oldest trade associations in the country. This was the first predecessor of what is today the Mechanical Contractors Association of New York. The innovative idea of banding together would enable members to assist each other in being cognizant of emerging technologies, addressing labor issues effectively and improving business practices.

MCA's Chronology

October 8, 1885
The Association of Manufacturers of Steam Apparatus was organized as a voluntary association.

May 31, 1900
The Association was incorporated pursuant to the provisions of the Membership Corporations Law of the State of New York, under the name Master Steam and Hot Water Fitters Association of New York City.

November 1, 1918
The name of the Association was changed to Heating and Piping Contractors New York City Association, Inc.

May 4, 1934
The name of the Association was changed to Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning Contractors New York City Association, Inc.

January 3, 1956
The name of the Association was changed to the Mechanical Contractors Association of New York, Inc.

No matter what name the Association took over the years, its purpose and drive have remained steadfast and true - serving New York City mechanical and sprinkler contractors for the promotion of the mechanical contracting industry.
